Liberty Gardens
Chesapeake
The Chesapeake Liberty Garden is a special place of natural beauty to
honor the memory of those who perished on September 11, 2001. It is a
special project sponsored by the Chesapeake Environmental Improvement
Council (CEIC) and the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department.
Keep America Beautiful, Inc. (KAB) invited all KAB communities to
establish Liberty Gardens, hoping that such gardens will be
established all across the U.S.A. Chesapeake has been a Keep America
Beautiful community since 1986.
The garden, designed by Nancy McPherson, former CEIC Chairperson, is
in the shape of a beautiful sunburst and is filled with perennials,
such as daylilies, heather, Carissa holly, and Firepower Nandina. Bill
Maxwell and his horticulture students from Tidewater Community College
have completed a stone retaining wall that can also be used as a
seating area. The retaining wall block was donated by Allied Concrete
Products, LLC and Riverside Brick and Supply Company, Inc.
Additionally, Oman Funeral Home has donated the services of their
engraver to inscribe Liberty Garden on the retaining wall so all will
know the purpose of the garden.
Home Depot donated $1,000 to start the garden, and several other
businesses have also made generous donations totaling almost $5,000,
including Lowe�s, Greenbrier Farms, Pine Ridge Perennials, Bennetts
Creek, Knotts Creek, K B Plant Farm, and Carter�s Country Corner.
Volunteers have installed the garden and are being recruited to care
for the garden.
Sculpture.
Sue Landerman, a local artist, designed and installed a five foot
sculpture centered at the top of the garden. Ms. Landerman is an
accomplished and experienced artist. Her work has been featured on
HGTV�s Dream Builders. Ms. Landerman charged a much-reduced price for
her work. The CEIC is able to pay her for her services, using donated
funds already on-hand.
Volunteers Needed. The
Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council is seeking a volunteer
group(s) to maintain the garden. Volunteers are needed to tend the
garden for a two-year period, watering, weeding, and inspecting for
pests. Groups such as Scouts, civic organizations, church groups,
community organizations, etc. are being sought. An Adopt-a-Garden sign
identifying the group will be erected at the garden.
