Litter Law Facts

Besides looking bad, litter can cause many problems for Hampton Roads:

  • It reduces economic activity such as attracting new businesses
  • It makes visitors and tourists less likely to return
  • It invites criminal activity and other blight such as graffiti and vandalism
  • It creates hazards for our wildlife, particularly in waterways and the Bay
  • It cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to pay for cleanup

Seven Sources of Litter

  1. Household trash handling and its placement at the curb for collection.
  2. Dumpsters used by businesses.
  3. Loading docks.
  4. Construction and demolition sites.
  5. Trucks with uncovered loads.
  6. Pedestrians.
  7. Motorists.
