What Your Locality Recycles

Residents of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, James City County, York County, Poquoson, Suffolk and Williamsburg.

Curbside Collection is available to households in participating communities. The Southeastern Public Service Authority collects recyclables every-other-week on your regular trash collection day from member communities located on the southside of Hampton Roads. They can be contacted at (757) 420-4700 for more information.  On the peninsula, contact the Virginia Peninsula Public Service Authority at (757) 259-9850. Both SPSA and VPPSA collect the following materials curbside:

• METAL PRODUCTS: Metal, Food & Beverage Cans; Aluminum Foil Products (foil, disposable pie pans, etc.);
• PLASTIC BOTTLES:  Plastic Jugs & Bottles with a 1 or 2 in the recycling triangle on the bottom of the container ...Milk Jugs, Soda Bottles, Household Cleaner Bottles, Shampoo Bottles, etc.  (rinse & remove lids, flatten if possible).  Motor oil bottles, other automotive fluid bottles & jugs, and pesticide bottles CAN NOT be recycled. 
• GLASS BOTTLES & JARS: clear, brown & green (rinse & remove lids/no blue glass) 
• HOUSEHOLD PAPER: Paper Grocery Bags, Telephone Books, Magazines, Single-Layer Cardboard (cereal and tissue boxes), Junk Mail, Cards, Stationery, School Paper, Computer Paper
• NEWSPAPER: clean & dry 

Please remove caps and lids, crush plastic bottles, aluminum and steel cans.  Place all materials in your program bin and leave at your curb by 7am on collection day.

Gloucester

•  Corrugated cardboard, single layer cardboard such as cereal and tissue boxes, newsprint, paper grocery bags, telephone books, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, cards, stationery, school paper, computer paper, adding machine tape.  All paper must be clean and dry, boxes must be flattened.
• Bi-metal food and beverage cans and aluminum cans and foil products should be rinsed and flattened - if possible. 
• Glass food and beverage containers in clear, green and brown - rinse and remove lids. 
• Plastic lids throw away - metal lids can be recycled.
• Plastic containers coded 1 and 2 for milk jugs, soda bottles, household cleaner bottles; remove lids; rinse containers and flatten if possible.   
• Paint cans must be empty and dry - lids separated from the cans. Metal aerosol cans must be empty with no slosh, no hiss present.
• Pesticide containers are only accepted during harmful household waste collections.
• Yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings and pine straw are turned into compost; made available to county residents at no charge.
• Trees, branches and shrubs are chipped for mulch and made available to county residents at no charge.
• Used oil (motor, transmission, hydraulic and gear oils, power steering fluids); 10 gallon limit per customer.
• Tires from automobiles and trucks; limit of 5 tires maximum per customer.
• Scrap metal which includes all appliances (must remove the doors off appliances).
• Lead and acid batteries are not accepted at the convenience centers.  Take batteries to your automotive centers.

residents of Hampton, Newport News and Virginia Beach:

Your automated curbside recycling container is picked up every-other-week for the following items:

Place carts within 3 ft. of the street by 7 AM the morning of your collection day for service. 

   In addition, residents of apartments and condominiums in Newport News and Hampton that do not receive curbside collection and do not have a management-sponsored recycling program can take their recyclables to the drop-off site at 5602 Chestnut Ave. in Newport News. The collection point is sponsored by the recycling contractor, Tidewater Fibre Corp. What Can NOT Be Recycled?

• Wet Paper, Greasy Paper (pizza boxes), Waxy Paper (freezer food boxes), or Lined Paper (milk cartons & juice boxes, candy wrappers, some packing paper) 

• Books, hardbound or paperback 

• Napkins, Paper Towels, Tissues 

• Carbon Paper or Wads of Paper

• Twine, String or Wire

• Ceramic Dishes or Ovenware 

• Plate Glass (window panes, mirrors)

• Light Bulbs: fluorescent & regular

• Needles or Other Medical Waste

• Clothes Hangers, Lawn Chair Frames, Pots & Pans or Other Scrap Metal

• Metal or Plastic lids

• Plastic-lined Aluminum cans (5.5 oz. pull tab pet food cans)

• Any plastic Pesticide, Poison, or Automotive Product Containers

• Plastic Bags - grocery, dry cleaning or garbage, sandwich bags, plastic wrap

• "Compatible" Plastic Jugs with more than one recycling logo (juice jugs that say "#7 compatible to #2")

• Plastic Microwave dishes, Clear Plastic "Clamshells" (salad or bakery containers), Butter Tubs, Yogurt Cups, "Tupperware �"

• Plastic Toys, Plastic Plant Pots, Plastic Pipes

• Foam Plastic Products - "Styrofoam �" cups, plates, packing materials

• Diapers, Other Personal Care Products
