Liberty Gardens
Newport News
The Newport News
Public Works Department, in cooperation with the Department of Parks,
Recreation and Tourism, the Woodmen of the World Association, and
Anderson's Home and Garden Showplace, dedicated a Liberty Garden on
September 12, 2002 to pay tribute to the victims and heroes of
September 11th.
The dedication
ceremony, "In Honor and Remembrance," was held at Jama Square
Park, located in the City's southeast section, at Jefferson Avenue and
25th Street in Newport News.
The ceremony was
one of 600 being held across the nation by Woodmen Lodges to present
flagpoles, U.S. flags, and commemorative plaques to their communities.
The garden serves as a special place of natural beauty
that allows our citizens to reflect upon the principles of freedom and
liberty on which our country is built. The Hiram Grand Lodge,
Adopt-a-Spot group in partnership with City of Newport News staff have
helped maintain the garden.
